Three Bolt Love
This is Bryson Carteret. He was 21 years old, and a Senior at Cactus City College, majoring in Art. He was a little annoyed when the Residence Hall Director informed the upper classmen that due to the numbers of new Freshmen, a few of them would be living with them in Foster Hall.He hoped the women were presentable, anyway. He was looking forward to convincing the innocent young things to pose for him. There were always a few who didn’t mind, but they were usually not the kind of girls one wanted to immortalize in paint.
Dannia Elizabeth Eggby was 18 years old, former high school cheerleader and star of the class musical, Oklahoma!
Dannia looked forward to going to college, and thought that living in Foster Hall would be so cool. She tried to ignore the threadbare, mismatched furniture. She had been sure that the dorms at Cactus City College would be more elegant. Like in the movies. But she was a naturally cheerful girl, who could hardly wait to start on her big adventure as a college student.
Dannia planned to join a sorority, learn all there was to know about North American Aboriginal Linguistics , and make some new friends. She did not plan to fall in love so quickly. She did notice, however, that some of the guys were kind of cute.
One evening, when Bryson was returning from a late Art History class, he happened to glimpse the loveliest girl he had seen in his life, through the window of the study room. He was
surprised to feel a tightening in his chest, and determined right then that he would get to know who she was, and find out if she was an art lover! She was exactly the kind of girl who should be immortalized in art.
The next day, Bryson made sure he happened to be outside the dorm when the girl of his dreams was heading off to class. “Going to main campus?” he asked. She looked up at him and her big brown eyes narrowed with suspicion. “Why?” she countered. Bryson laughed, and admitted, “OK, so I just wanted to meet you. My name is Bryson. What’s yours?” Dannia told him her name, that she was a freshman, and during the walk to main campus, he discovered that she was indeed a lover of Art. On her part, Dannia, who felt that she had an artistic soul herself, felt an immediate rapport with Bryson. They began to walk to class together every chance they got. And talked of Art.
They talked so much that they lost track of time.
Dannia was afraid that her parents were going to be shocked when her first semester grades were posted. She spent an awful lot of time talking about art, music, theatre, and everything else with Bryson Carteret. He was so sophisticated and worldly, that she couldn’t help getting a little crush on him. He wasn’t perfect, of course–no man is–but he was the most exciting part of an exciting adventure.
One evening, when the Dining Hall was serving lobster, Bryson joined Dannia for dinner.
She was thrilled. It was almost like a date, except the food had already been paid for by their meal plan.
When Dannia told him about her interest in the occult, Bryson continued what she could loosely describe as eating. He shoveled his food into his mouth without the least bit of finesse, like he had not eaten in years. She was a little revolted. ![]()
He stared at her, his cheeks full of lobster, and chewed thoughtfully. At least, Dannia thought, he isn’t talking with his mouth full. After a while, Bryson joined her in discussing her theories, and never once did he indicate that he thought she was some kind of nut. Dannia appreciated that. She even forgave his total lack of table manners. No boy her age had ever treated her interest in the supernatural with such
respect and consideration for her feelings. Dannia was falling in love.
Soon, Dannia and Bryson were spending every free moment together. Bryson’s fraternity brothers were disgusted with him, and predicted an early marriage for him. He laughed off their concern, but had to admit to himself that he preferred playing Pillow Fight with Dannia all night to
drinking and playing pool with his buddies. He had not thought of another woman since the day he had met her. If he had not been falling in love, he would have been concerned for his sanity. ![]()
Their study sessions helped keep their grades acceptable, but soon they degenerated into necking sessions which lasted late into the night.
Before the end of the semester, the relationship between Bryson and Dannia had progressed to a point where Bryson’s friends were shaking their heads and telling each other that they had predicted that things would come to this sad pass. And Dannia’s friends were busy planning a wedding.
They took turns, spending one night together in his room
and the next night together in hers. ![]()
And finally, best beloved, your Mommy and Daddy decided not to go steady after all, but to go right ahead and get married.
